Sophie – Adult Social Care Course

Case Study

Learner Journey & Progression

Sophie enrolled on the course during the Coronavirus lockdown so that she could gain some of the knowledge she needed to try to get into University. During the course Sophie started a new job and has managed to juggle work, training and looking after a young child. Sophie was able to attend several of the sessions at the beginning of the course but due to her work schedule, it difficult for her to continue doing so each week, she was sent the resources needed and continued with the course independently, support was provided ongoing.

Sophie has grown in confidence during her time on the course and has been successful in gaining a place at Durham University where she will be studying Psychology.

Why did you enrol on the course?

“I enrolled on the course as I was anticipating starting an access to higher education course in health in September. At the time of starting the course I was home and not doing a lot and recovering from an episode of post-natal depression, so this was the perfect way to keep my mind active and learn new things to help me succeed in my future studies.” – Sophie

What did you expect to achieve from the training?

“I expected to achieve new skills in areas I had not previously studied, being from a background of new home sales. I certainly did achieve a lot of new skills and I will be using my new knowledge actively.” – Sophie

How has your experience of distance learning with Optimum Skills been?

“The experience has been great, the sessions were well prepared and very easy to follow. Carolann my tutor would always reply in less than 24 hours to any email queries.” – Sophie

How have you enjoyed the sessions?

“The sessions have been great I have enjoyed learning new skills and found the presentations very easy to follow and a great way of learning. – Sophie

What impact has the learning had on you?

“The learning has had a huge impact on me, I am using my new skills daily to understand tasks within my current administration role within the NHS. I remember typing things and not really understanding how safeguarding worked, but now I feel I have a vast knowledge in this area and only two months ago I had no knowledge at all. I have been very fortunate to gain an unconditional offer from Durham University on their foundation programme in September in Psychology, after passing this I will then move onto their 3-year full time degree to qualify. The level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care has been a huge help and kept my mind busy, I have learned new skills which I will use in my further studies to succeed. If anyone is looking to further their knowledge and gain a recognised qualification, I would highly recommend Optimum Skills who offer a vast range of courses. If you keep your mind active, set your eye on the prize, work hard, you will succeed!” – Sophie

Tutor Quote

“Sophie has worked really hard; she has been able to complete all of the work to a high standard. Sophie has achieved a lot during her time on the course from starting a new job and securing a place at Durham University in September. I have seen her become much more confident in her own abilities, which has allowed her to further her skills at university. Sophie has also juggled the training with Optimum Skills with her new employer training and looking after a small child, whilst still producing really good work.”
