Skill of the Month: Build Your Workforce with the Urban Driver Apprenticeship | Optimum Skills
Finding skilled and reliable drivers is a growing challenge for many UK businesses. From retail and construction to manufacturing, recycling and removals, employers need drivers who can do much more than move goods from one place to another.
That is why our Skill of the Month is the Urban Driver Apprenticeship.
This apprenticeship offers businesses a practical way to train new or existing employees. It can help you build driving skills within your team, improve customer service and prepare your workforce for future demand.

A growing need for skilled drivers
The shortage of professional drivers continues to affect businesses across the UK. A recent Logistics UK survey found that almost 44% of businesses with HGV operations did not have enough drivers during the second quarter of 2026. This was a sharp increase from the previous quarter. Employers are also dealing with rising transport costs and continued pressure on their services.
Although these figures may change over time, they show why businesses need to think ahead. Relying only on external recruitment can be costly and difficult. Training people who already understand your business can be a more reliable long-term solution.

What is the Urban Driver Apprenticeship?
The Urban Driver Apprenticeship is a Level 2 programme. It normally takes around 12 months to complete, followed by an end-point assessment.
It is designed for people who drive fixed-axle vehicles weighing more than 3,500kg. Unlike long-distance drivers, urban drivers usually complete shorter journeys and make several deliveries or collections each day. They often work in busy towns and cities where traffic, pedestrians, restricted access and limited space can make driving more complex.
Typical job roles include:
- Urban driver
- Delivery driver
- Customer delivery driver
- HGV driver
The apprenticeship can support businesses in many sectors, including retail, construction, agriculture, manufacturing, removals, recycling, laundry services and pallet distribution.
More than driving a vehicle
A good urban driver is also a customer service professional and a public face of your business.
Drivers may be expected to speak with customers, provide updates, answer questions and deal with problems. Depending on the role, they may also install products, demonstrate equipment or complete other services at the customer’s site.
Through the apprenticeship, employees learn how to:
- Prepare and inspect their vehicle
- Load, secure and unload goods safely
- Plan routes and respond to delays
- Drive safely in busy urban areas
- Use in-vehicle technology and reporting systems
- Carry out on-site risk assessments
- Follow driving, safety and working-time rules
- Communicate clearly with customers and colleagues
- Handle goods, returns and delivery records correctly
- Reduce fuel use and consider the environment
This combination of driving, safety and customer service skills can help employees become more confident and useful across your operation.
What are the entry requirements?
Employees need a valid UK driving licence, with at least Category B entitlement, to begin the apprenticeship. They must also be at least 18 years old by the time they receive their provisional vocational licence.
Before completing the programme, the apprentice must gain either a Category C or C1 driving licence. They will also receive the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, known as the Driver CPC, as part of gaining the required licence.
The apprenticeship has a maximum funding band of £8,000, although the amount an employer contributes will depend on the apprenticeship funding rules and the size of the business.
Why should employers consider it?
The Urban Driver Apprenticeship allows you to develop the skills your business actually needs. Employees learn while working, so they can apply their new knowledge in real situations.
For employers, the benefits can include:
- A stronger supply of trained drivers
- Improved safety and compliance
- Better customer service
- Higher employee confidence
- Better staff retention and career progression
- Less reliance on difficult external recruitment
It can also give an existing employee a clear career path. Someone working in your warehouse, yard, delivery support team or another part of the business may already have the right attitude and knowledge of your operation. With structured training, they could become a skilled urban driver.
Invest in the people you already have
The driver shortage will not be solved overnight. However, employers can take practical steps now to strengthen their workforce.
The Urban Driver Apprenticeship is not only about gaining a licence. It develops safe, professional and customer-focused employees who understand their responsibilities on the road and at a customer’s site.
If your business depends on deliveries or collections, now is a good time to look at the talent already within your team. Your next skilled driver may already be working for you.
