Skill of the Month: Start Your Career as a Multi-Channel Marketer

Do you enjoy creating content, using social media or coming up with fresh ideas? Maybe you wonder why some adverts stick in your mind while others are easy to forget.

If so, the Multi-Channel Marketer Apprenticeship could be a brilliant way to start your marketing career. It is a Level 3 programme that usually takes around 18 months, and it lets you learn while working and earning.

Multi-Channel Marketers working together on a project

What does a Multi-Channel Marketer do?

A Multi-Channel Marketer helps a business promote its products, services or ideas across different platforms. These platforms are called marketing channels.

They can include:

  • Social media
  • Websites
  • Email
  • Videos
  • Online adverts
  • Leaflets and brochures
  • Events
  • Public relations
  • Sales materials

The job is much more than posting on social media. You will learn how to understand an audience, plan campaigns, create content and check whether your marketing has worked.

You could work in a company’s own marketing team or for an agency that helps lots of different clients. Marketing skills are useful in almost every industry, from retail and hospitality to healthcare, engineering and technology.

Learn while you earn

An apprenticeship gives you a recognised qualification while you gain real experience in a job. Instead of only learning in a classroom, you will use your skills in real situations.

You might help plan a campaign, write a social media post, update a website or look at campaign results. This helps you build a portfolio of work you can show future employers.

Your employer and tutor will support you along the way, helping you grow your knowledge, confidence and practical skills. Apprenticeships combine working with training, so you learn by doing.

Skills you will develop

Understanding customers

Good marketing starts with understanding people. You will learn how to research audiences and find out what they want, need and care about.

This could involve surveys, online research, keyword tools and customer information. You will also look at competitors and spot new trends.

That research helps you decide who a campaign should target and what message will work best.

Planning campaigns

A strong campaign needs a clear plan. You will learn how to read or create a marketing brief, which explains the campaign’s goal, audience and deadline.

You could learn to:

  • Set clear goals
  • Identify the target audience
  • Choose the best channels
  • Plan tasks and deadlines
  • Work to a budget
  • Share ideas with others
  • Review what worked after the campaign

These skills help you stay organised and focused on results.

Creating content

Content includes the words, images, graphics and videos a business shares. As an apprentice, you may create social media posts, website pages, emails, blogs, videos, graphics, posters and presentations.

You will learn copywriting, which means writing clear and persuasive messages. You will also learn to proofread carefully and make sure information is accurate.

Each platform is different. A short TikTok video needs a different style from a professional email. You will learn how to adapt content while keeping the brand’s voice consistent.

Using different channels

Customers rarely use only one platform. They might discover a business on social media, visit its website, sign up for emails and then get in touch.

You will learn how channels work together to guide people through that journey. This helps you choose the right platform for the right audience, message and goal.

Using marketing technology

Modern marketers use technology every day. During the apprenticeship, you could gain experience with social media scheduling tools, email platforms, design software, spreadsheets, website analytics and project management tools.

Marketing changes quickly, so being curious and willing to learn new tools is a big advantage.

Understanding data

Marketing is creative, but it also involves numbers. You will learn how to track results such as website visits, social media engagement, video views, email opens, clicks, enquiries, leads and sales.

For example, if one type of social media post gets far more likes and comments than another, you can use that information to plan better content next time.

You do not need to be a maths expert. The apprenticeship will help you understand and explain basic marketing data.

Working responsibly

Marketers must follow rules around customer information, photos, videos and written content. You will learn about data protection, UK GDPR, copyright, cyber security and trading laws.

You will also learn how to create marketing that is honest, inclusive and respectful. This protects customers, your employer and the company’s reputation.

What makes a good Multi-Channel Marketer?

You do not need experience before you start. This apprenticeship could suit you if you are:

  • Creative and full of ideas
  • Interested in people and what influences them
  • Comfortable using technology
  • Organised
  • A clear communicator
  • Interested in social media and digital content
  • Happy working with others
  • Curious about data and results

You do not need to be confident in every area yet. The whole point of an apprenticeship is to help you learn and improve.

Where could it take you?

After completing the apprenticeship, you could move into roles such as social media assistant, digital marketing assistant, content creator, marketing administrator or communications assistant.

You could also continue learning through further training or a higher-level apprenticeship.

A marketing career can be creative, varied and rewarding. One day you might plan social media content; the next, you could review results, update a website or help at an event.
