Team Leader / Supervisor Level 3 Apprenticeship
What were you doing education-wise and career-wise before the apprenticeship?
“I was and I still am the lead learning and development tutor (construction) at Optimum Skills. Prior to working at Optimum Skills, I was an apprenticeship skills coach delivering level 2 apprenticeships in the logistics sector. Education-wise, I have always completed different courses for personal and professional progression.” – Nathan
Before the apprenticeship, did you carry out any other training with Optimum Skills?
“As an employee at Optimum Skills, I have attended a wide range of courses for personal and professional progression. In the past 2 years I have completed Mental Health First Aid, behaviours that challenge, and safeguarding and Prevent qualifications (all at level 2). Now I have completed my apprenticeship, which is another qualification gained through Optimum Skills.” – Nathan
What has been your experience on your apprenticeship so far?
“I have been fully supported by management and the senior leadership team throughout my apprenticeship. From 121 discussions to supporting development plans for specific milestones in my apprenticeship. My line manager, Chris, has been a massive support, and he has fully prepared me for all elements of my role as a lead. Allison, the head of construction, has given me support and mentored me through my apprenticeship as well.” – Nathan
What are you enjoying about your apprenticeship?
“I am enjoying the difference in myself as a lead. When I started my apprenticeship, I had led teams in another industry, and leading a team in education felt completely different to me. I have learnt the importance of trust, effective communication and owning what I do as a lead. I most enjoy the organisational culture of Optimum Skills and enjoy working with the people I work with every day.” – Nathan
What are some skills, knowledge and behaviours you have been developing on the apprenticeship?
“I have learnt a lot of the theory behind building a high performing team, emotional intelligence for supporting and understanding my team and I have also enjoyed learning about project lifecycles and learning different ways to track, report and update the progress of a project.” – Nathan
How will the apprenticeship help you with your career goals / ambitions?
“I am a very ambitious and driven individual, and I see this apprenticeship as a starting point for my progression in management and senior leadership. I achieved a distinction in this apprenticeship which has strengthened my drive to progress further.” – Nathan
Would you recommend becoming an apprentice to others?
“As this is my second apprenticeship, I wholeheartedly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone seeking a head start in a career they pursue. The reason I personally recommend an apprenticeship is because it gives you hands-on experience, you earn while you learn, and you gain a nationally recognised qualification that allows you to demonstrate the competence you have developed in your chosen field.” – Nathan
