Amy – Construction Short Course
Case Study
Learner Journey
Amy was referred to Optimum Skills Construction from YEI (Youth Employment Initiative), on her arrival to the centre she was accompanied by a representative from YEI due to being nervous about being in a different environment. Amy currently works in retail on a 4-hour contract, which is not what she aims to do long term.
Learner Progression
Amy came in to the construction centre with little experience of the industry, and from the start she was keen to progress on the course. Amy has built a half brick wall and now knows how to make carpentry joints, she has shown some good attributes that could help her gain employment in the industry.
“When I first joined the course, I felt nervous as I was unsure of what to expect and how I would fit into the group. My nerves were quickly put to rest after speaking to Emily at Optimum Skills, fitting into the group was a lot easier than I expected. I have really enjoyed my time on the course both with the bricklaying and the joinery. Seeing my own progress and finished products have really had a positive impact on myself in realising my potential.”
Next Steps
Amy’s next steps are to gain her Health and Safety L1, Basic Construction Skills L1 and CSCS Health and Safety card which will then lead to employment in the construction industry either as an apprentice in brick or joinery or a labourer.
