Michael – Adult Social Care & Dementia Awareness Course
Case Study
Learner Journey & Progression
Michael enrolled on the courses, Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care, and Awareness in Dementia Level 2. He felt that with the lockdown, due to Coronavirus, was a great time for him to gain some new skills and look at a change in career path. Michael has attended all training sessions over Zoom which was an application he had not used before; his work was of a really high standard and was always submitted before the submission dates given.
Michael has really grown in confidence during his time on the course and has been able to apply for employment as a support worker with Highlea Care This is something Michael had always wanted to do and felt he couldn’t apply for a role until he started doing his training with us at Optimum Skills.
When asked to comment on his experience Michael said the following:
“I enrolled on two courses, Adult Social Care and Dementia Awareness, this became an amazing opportunity to gain some skills and set goals within myself and to give myself a sense of purpose, after having battled with my mental health for many years. My goal was to achieve knowledge and gain the skills that I wanted to start a career and have some qualifications to help me start off. I have found this experience outstanding, and a major boost in confidence and it has helped me to believe in myself more. I have really enjoyed the sessions as they gave me confidence. I was supported massively and knew I could ask if I was unsure about anything without feeling anxious, also being able to have an input has built my ability to talk in a group. This learning has made a huge impact on my life, I gained confidence to apply for my dream job and happily signed a contract after being offered it, without this training I would have not even tried and I am VERY thankful to my tutor Carolann Martin who has been outstanding and if it wasn’t for the help and support she has given me then I would still be at home with no goals or options. Again, I will be forever thankful for Optimum Skills helping me discover my dreams!” – Michael
“Michael has worked really hard so far during his time on the course, he has been able to complete all of his work to a really good standard and is happy to participate during the Zoom sessions, he has also been able to support one of the other learners on programme due to knowing them prior to the course. It has been really good to see him being confident enough to apply for a support worker role and I was really pleased when he told me that he had been successful thanks to doing the training with myself, as this has led to the employer choosing him. Michael has also juggled the training and his induction training with his employer and has still managed to submit his work on time, this shows his level of motivation and organisational skills and will help him to do well in his career.” – Tutor
Next Steps
Michael’s next steps are to complete the training and start his job in the next few weeks.
