Team Leading Principles Level 2 Short Course

Starting Point

“I’d only done one course before, and I thought this experience would be more like that one. On that course, I sat down with a tutor, but it was a looser structure.

This Team Leading course was much more detailed than I thought it was going to be. There was more writing.” – Kevin

What were your goals going into the course?

“What I wanted to get was anything new that I could learn for my team. Specifically, I wanted them to be more proactive volunteering for overtime, as this is an issue in my workplace.

Before I started this course, one lad had only ever done 4 hours of overtime in total. Since I used what I learnt, he has volunteered for more overtime.

I had a conversation with another lad who had not volunteered before. I explained the amount of work we had on, advised he could make more money for Christmas, and asked for his help. He stepped forward straight away.

The difference is that I am bringing them into the decision-making process more. Previously I had asked at the end of each day when everyone was tired, but now I get them more involved in the process and bring it up at the start of each shift.” – Kevin

What have you achieved?

“Now that I have more people available for work, I have achieved my targets because I now have extra hands to help.

On the course I asked my tutor about the problem, and they came up with practical suggestions. They also helped me think of other options if this approach stops working. I have kept the notebooks that I wrote throughout the course in my locker. I have used them to refer to when I have needed extra support at work.”- Kevin

What are your goals after working with Optimum Skills?

“I would like to have a fully happy, motivated team. I know this will be a challenge to achieve every day, but I would like to have 80% happiness and engagement over the course of a year. That would be amazing.

To do this I need to keep them in the loop and train them more. I need to show them how to have more pride in what they do. An important thing I have learnt is repetition, repetition, repetition.” – Kevin
