Sustainability Tutor – North East England (Optimum Skills)
Job Title: Sustainability Tutor
Salary: From £30,000 per annum
Location: Newton Aycliffe Head Office plus Middlesbrough, Gateshead & Newcastle Hubs (with travel across the North East as required)
Reports to: Senior Operations Manager

Key Responsibilities Teaching, Learning & Assessment
- Deliver engaging, high-quality teaching in sustainability and environmental practices across classroom, remote, and workplace settings.
- Provide personalised learning and support, including progress tracking, learner reviews, and individual action planning.
- Ensure delivery aligns with national standards, curriculum frameworks, and employer needs in green and sustainable sectors.
- Support curriculum development by adapting or designing content relevant to emerging green technologies, net-zero targets, and sustainable business practices.
- Plan and prepare lessons and resources in accordance with contract requirements and learner needs.
- Maintain accurate learner records, tracking progress and outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with curriculum teams and other tutors to share good practice and manage learner/employer concerns.
- Participate actively in team meetings, quality assurance, and staff development initiatives.
Qualifications, Competence & Behaviours Essential:
- Relevant vocational qualification and/or industry experience in sustainability, environmental management, energy efficiency, waste reduction, or a related subject area.
- Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PTLLS, PGCE, Cert Ed).
- Recognised assessing qualification (e.g. CAVA).
- Functional Skills Level 2 in English, Maths, and ICT (or equivalent).
- At least 3 years’ experience teaching or assessing in a sustainability-related or educational context.
- Strong IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office and online delivery platforms.
- Knowledge of DfE funding rules, End Point Assessment (EPA), and Adult Skills Fund (ASF) compliance.
- Prior experience with Ofsted or internal/external quality assurance processes.
- Ability to travel regionally; a full driving licence and access to a car is essential.
- Willingness to undertake a DBS Enhanced Disclosure and provide satisfactory references.
Desirable:
- Experience in developing or delivering training aligned with the UK Green Jobs Taskforce or similar government sustainability initiatives.
- Awareness of industry trends in net-zero, circular economy, or environmental legislation.
- Familiarity with carbon literacy or sustainability education frameworks.
