Functional Skills Tutor – Gateshead & Newcastle (Optimum Skills)
Job Title: Functional Skills Tutor
Location: Gateshead and Newcastle plus travel throughout Northeast where needed.
Reports to: Senior Operations Manager
Salary: From £28,000 per annum
Job Purpose: The Functional Skills tutor will play a crucial role in overseeing the delivery and examination of maths and English across our provision. This role requires strong organisational skills, excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to strive for results to meet our organisational targets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Effective Delivery: Design and deliver high-quality lessons and learning materials to effectively teach functional skills in maths and English, ensuring alignment with qualification standards and learners’ needs.
- Curriculum Development: Collaborate with curriculum development colleagues to contextualise materials and enhance the apprenticeship curriculum, ensuring alignment with industry standards and organisational objectives.
- Learner Support: Provide individualised advice, guidance, and support to apprentices, identifying their strengths and areas for improvement to help them achieve their goals.
- Examination Management: Plan, administer, and delegate examinations in maths and English, ensuring adherence to invigilation and examination board regulations maintaining the integrity of the assessment process.
- Meet KPI Targets: Consistently achieve or surpass KPI targets related to learner progress, outcomes, compliance, reporting etc. ensuring the successful delivery and completion of training programs.
- Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate records of apprentice attendance, progress, and performance, and ensure compliance with ESFA regulatory requirements and organisational policies and procedures.
- Progress Monitoring: Regularly assess learners’ progress in maths and English, tracking their performance and providing timely feedback to support their learning journey and address any areas of difficulty.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with colleagues and other departments within Optimum Skills Ltd to integrate functional skills provision into overall learner development. Communicate effectively with learners, employers, and other stakeholders to provide updates on learners’ progress in maths and English, address any concerns or issues, and promote engagement and participation in functional skills activities.
- Continuous Professional Development: Stay updated on developments in functional skills education, attending training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in teaching maths and English effectively.
- Additional Responsibilities: Undertake any additional tasks or projects as assigned by management to support the overall success and growth of Optimum Skills, demonstrating flexibility and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Hold or be willing to work towards relevant teaching qualifications e.g. PTLLS, PGCE, Cert Ed etc.
- Hold or be willing to work towards relevant assessing qualifications e.g. CAVA.
- Level 2 Functional Skills (English, Maths and ICT) or equivalent
- Proficient in the use of IT systems, including Microsoft Office programmes.
- Have experience of training and/or assessing in an educational or workplace environment.
- Good understanding of ESFA funding rules, EPA requirements etc.

- Be able to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in order to meet the challenges and demands of the role.
